Ayaz Soomro is name associated with Pakistan People Party’s (PPP) Larkana division for his lifelong commitment as a Jiala, party worker, and a lawyer.
He started his political career early on as a student leader during Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s time. Later he was jailed many a times for his political stance during the Movement for the Restoration of Democracy (MRD).
Son of a primary school teacher, Khuda Bux Soomro, Ayaz made him prod after finishing his primary education in hometown Shahdadkot, Ayaz then moved to Larkana with his family where he undertook his secondary education and then to Sindh University Jamshoro for his LLB.
Ayaz was widely loved in his district as a PPP Jiala, but he was also a famous lawyer. He remained president PPP Larkana division for life. In the 2002-2007 government, he served Law Minister with additional portfolios. He got married during his term.
Such was the extent of his spartan existence that even when he was a minister from 2008-2013 he had no house to his name. His friends remember that earlier he used to bus to Karachi for his legal cases. In 2013 he became a national assembly member but his ill health kept him from attending the sessions.
Ayaz Soomro is remembered by PPP leaders as a lifelong member who made personal sacrifices out of loyalty for his party cause. He died in Manhattan of a cardiac arrest during his treatment.
